The Solomon Method

Options for Accredited Training

Training and accreditation in The Solomon Method enables a successful candidate to become a registered provider of the method. The steps to follow are:

1. The seminar. The initial step is to gain more information about the theoretical basis of The Solomon Method and the practical implications of the theoretical principles. This involves either :

i. Registering for an online introductory seminar covering the theoretical basis of The Solomon Method and implications for practice.

ii. Arranging for a representative of WLI to conduct an in-house seminar at a school or other agency on the Solomon Method.

2. The second step is the decision to enrol in a training program to become a licensed provider of The Solomon Method:

  • to teach in an existing Reading for Sure centre
  • to teach it privately on a commercial basis or;
  • as part of a curriculum of a school or organisation.

This prompts the question:  ‘what qualifications are needed?’

Qualifications for becoming a Solomon Method provider

The enrolment in The Solomon Method training course does not require any specific previous academic qualifications.  Recognition of prior learning is considered on a case by case basis.

The requirements do include a current Australian ‘Working with Children’ Check.  In the interests of Health and safety regulations, preference is given to non smoking participants.

Otherwise the acceptance for training in The Solomon Method takes into account the following qualities of the applicant.

  • The understanding of the reasons for beginning literacy education with pupils at the appropriate earliest age.
  • Recognition of the reasons for and dedication to alternatives to current approaches to reading instruction.
  • Willingness to study the theory of the method and to maintain understanding of its goals and sub-goals.
  •  Willingness to have accessible all necessary teaching resources prepared  in advance of each planned contact with a pupil,  and to know and apply the tools and techniques of The Solomon Method.
  • The ability to engage pupils on a one to one basis or as a group in learning to read.
  • The ability to apply The Solomon Method resources in innovative ways, to maintain the continuing interest of pupils in the ongoing tuition.
  •  Willingness to accept the terms and conditions, procedures and policies governing the application of The Solomon Method.

Notes for applicants

  • The assessment of the candidate’s suitability will be through the means of an interview or questionnaire, taking the above criteria into account.
  • The full course of The Solomon Method Diploma in Literacy Education consists of ten units, the first two of which are the Preliminary Literacy Skills designed for students at the pre-reading level in English.
  • The next three units (Units 3, 4 and 5) have the goal of achieving reading, spelling and writing English.
  • The following three units (6, 7 and 8) are aimed at developing student skills in comprehension, composition and grammar.
  • The remaining two units (9 and 10) deal with pupils with special needs and with the organisation and administration of various applications of The Solomon Method, including classroom application.
  • The time requirement,  for the practical application for each unit is a minimum of fifteen hours, or until the applicant in a given unit is assessed as competent.

Pathways to accreditation

There are two pathways for an accepted applicant to gain accreditation on successful completion of each unit.

  1. Accreditation by certification granted by World Literacy International (WLI).
  2. National Accreditation (granted by the Department of Education and Training of the Australian Federal Government) at the level of Certificate 1V or Diploma in Literacy Education – The Solomon Method.

Details of the above accreditation processes.

It will be noted that the major difference between the paths to accreditation lies in the fact that the National Accreditation by the government is assessed by a Government recognised Registered Training Organisation, while the assessment for Accreditation by WLI is conducted by WLI qualified staff. It should also be noted that the course content is identical for each type of accreditation.  However, the assessment by the Department of Education and Training contains more components and requires an assessment fee.
