Parents can read (and re-read) these old favourites with their pre-reader child. Let the child ‘read along’ with you, until they know the rhyme off by heart. Point to the words, and have them point along with you – they will learn that words have a specific sound and meaning.
Black and white line pictures
Simple pictures to promote the development of vocabulary.
The clear black line pictures provide a basis for conversation and games such as finding "something that flies" etc.
Colour A4 chart with simple pictures to identify alphabet letters.
Introduce one alphabet letter each week for the first half of the school year, with the Children’s Weekly tabloid – eight pages full of related pre-literacy activities. Essential as an extension programme for pupils needing more time before proceeding with further reading challenges
