The Solomon Method is a comprehensive literacy model for teaching the English language.
It begins with Reading for Sure...
What Causes a Reading Disorder?
Poor or delayed reading occurs when the reader has not learned to analyse the sounds that make up the spoken word. They see the word as a whole and ‘picture’ it, rather than pronounce it.
When this tendency remains the pupil’s dominant strategy for recording words after the age of six, it indicates a delay in neurological development, or an unsuitable instruction for achieving the process of reading.

| Reading without pronouncing is the major cause of reading delay. | English is a difficult language to pronounce... Children learn to guess or memorise instead of pronouncing new words. |
| After a while guessing and memory fail with unfamiliar words. The pupil has no strategy for working out the accurate pronunciation of a word... |
| ...which may have a combination of vowels that can be pronounced in innumerable ways. Another major obstacle in reading English is the unpredictable 'silent' letter. |
|
| Without correct pronunciation there is no way of gaining meaning from the printed word. Reading then becomes a useless exercise and the pupil gives up. |
