The Alphabet Song

Reading begins when written letters are converted to speech sounds. However, we commonly confuse students of English by beginning reading with the spelling names of the alphabet letters while joyfully singing ai bee see dee ee ef jee as if that is all there is to it. These letter names must then be unlearned in order to join the phonetic sound of each letter to pronounce a word correctly. Dr Solomon found that many children are unable to make that shift at the optimal time. Their confusion often leads to reluctance to learn to read.

Her wish for a song of universal appeal which would demonstrate the speech sound of the letters and have lasting auditory and visual impact has been realised in The Alphabet Song. The phonetic equivalent of each letter is impressed upon the singer in the alphabetic sequence, accompanied by vivid visual images and acoustic rhythms. The rhythm and the fun can also be maintained independently of the music by simply following the word pattern matched to the pictures. In this way The Alphabet Song becomes the child’s essential first reading book.
